This has become one of my favorite TV series. It is based on, or at least inspired by, a true story of a black high school athlete from the south side of Los Angeles who joined the posh school in Beverly Hills to become their football star. Back 30 years or more almost all TV shows featured white characters and their stories. Gradually programming began to represent a larger cross-section of society. However early shows that featured black families were mostly comedies, and slapstick at that, featuring annoying black stereotype characters. I rarely watched any of them, they just weren`t interesting. This show features a black character, a black coach with a white wife and two teenagers, and several other prominent black characters. Some of them are gang members. But it also features a number of white characters, so it is not any type of stereotype casting. I`ve never lived in that area but it seems very authentic to me and the issues presented seem very plausible. In total a very interesting series that isn`t just entertainment, it speaks to a culture and issues most of us have never been exposed to.
